Introduction
Input lag is the delay between pressing a button and seeing the result on screen. Even 50ms of extra input lag makes games feel sluggish and unresponsive. The good news: most input lag on console comes from settings — and it’s completely fixable without new hardware.
Step 1: Enable Game Mode on Your TV (Most Important)
This alone reduces TV input lag from 50-100ms to under 20ms on most modern TVs.
Go to your TV settings → Picture settings → Enable “Game Mode” or “ALLM” (Auto Low Latency Mode). This disables post-processing effects that add delay.
Every major TV manufacturer has this setting. It’s the single biggest improvement you can make.
Step 2: Set Console Output to Match TV Capability
PS5:
- Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output
- Set resolution to your TV’s native resolution
- Enable 120Hz output if your TV supports it
- Turn ON VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) if your TV supports it
Xbox Series X:
- Settings → General → TV & display options
- Enable “Variable refresh rate”
- Set 4K UHD and 120Hz if supported
Step 3: Use Performance Mode in Games
Most modern games offer Quality vs Performance modes. Performance mode targets 60fps or 120fps instead of 30fps, this alone cuts perceived input lag in half.
PS5: In-game settings or game hub settings → choose Performance Mode
Xbox: In-game settings → Frame Rate → Performance
Step 4: Use an HDMI 2.1 Cable
If you have a PS5, Xbox Series X, or modern TV, use an HDMI 2.1 cable for 4K120 and VRR support. HDMI 2.0 cables bottleneck modern consoles.
Step 5: Use a Wired Controller
Wireless controllers add ~4-8ms of input lag vs wired. In competitive gaming, use the USB-C cable for PS5 DualSense or Xbox controller.
Step 6: Disable TV HDR for Competitive Games
HDR processing adds 5-10ms of lag on many TVs. For competitive gaming, disable HDR in TV settings and play in SDR.
Step 7: Keep TV Firmware Updated
TV manufacturers release firmware updates that reduce input lag. Check for updates monthly.
Step 8: Use a Gaming Monitor Instead of TV
Gaming monitors have 1-4ms input lag vs 10-20ms for even gaming TVs. The biggest single upgrade if you play competitive games seriously.
Conclusion
Enable Game Mode on your TV, select Performance Mode in games, and use a wired controller. These three changes alone will make your console feel like a different device.
